The American Cultures
Student Research Prize
Application Deadline: March 20th, 2009
The American Cultures Center is pleased to announce the American Cultures Student Research Prize. The American Cultures Student Research Prize is intended to recognize a standard of excellence in scholarship, which fits with the core intention of the American Cultures requirement—to create scholarship, which promotes the understanding of race, ethnicity, and culture in a comparaŽtive and integrative fashion.
Two prizes will be awarded. One for the successful submission from a lower-division course, and one for the successful submission from an upper-division course. In addition to a cash award of $1,000, and with permission, recipients will have their work published on the American Cultures website.
Who is eligible?
Students in any American Cultures course taught in either the Spring 2008 or Fall 2008 seŽmester. Student work can be nominated by any faculty member. Only one submission per student. Submissions of group work, formed as an individual paper/project, is also permitted.
What can be submitted?
Research papers from all courses at all levels may be submitted. It must be accompanied by an interpretative essay, directions of which are listed below.
What is the Basis for Selection?
A two page interpretative essay which addresses the following:
- How the research question was constructed
- How the research process was carried out
- How the research question was linked to the larger intent of the course.
How to Apply
Along with an accompanying letter of nomination from the supporting faculty, please submit the interpretative essay and research paper/product in either hard copy and electronic email attachment (Microsoft Word).

Applications should be submitted for review by March 20, 2009. Decisions will be announced April 10, 2009. The award ceremony will be held on May 1, 2009.
