Participants of the Engineering Scholars as Engaged Scholars (ES2) Program are using more than just technical skills to begin addressing some of today's most pressing issues. This first year program introduced students to social and environmental justice topics through workshops, coursework, and community-engaged research. The program included a newly developed course, offered for the first time in Spring 2014, that challenged students to look beyond the technical elements of their work and recognize the deeply social and political nature of engineering questions.
The course partners with local and regional community groups providing opportunities to engage in real-world projects affecting diverse communities. These projects include those that address environmental and social justice issues including contaminated drinking water, industrial pollution, and air pollution.
