"We, the participants in The Urban Experience course, were especially interested in how structural racism, oppression, environmental racism and racial capitalism are displayed in cities and urban areas throughout the country. We were inspired by Rebecca Solnit’s(link is external)(link is external) maps and created an “atlas” of West Oakland, examining the layers of history, prominent figures, and various transformations in the area from the 1800’s to today. We do acknowledge that this examination is from the perspective of an outsider, and that the experience may be different from those that formerly and currently call West Oakland home. We also acknowledge that West Oakland sits on the territory of xučyun (Huichin (Hoo-Choon)), the ancestral and unceded land of the Chochenyo (Cho-chen-yo) speaking Ohlone people, the successors of the historic and sovereign Verona Band of Alameda County (source)."
