Researching/Teaching in Troubled Times 4/30 and 5/7

As we move towards the end of thesemester, we invite you to join us for two timely conversations, one focused on research impacts during COVID-19 and one focused on teaching. Both will center issues of equity, inclusion, diversity and belonging. The programs are intended as open-ended, peer conversations
for participants to talk about their experiences, ask questions, and
share ideas and resources with colleagues from across campus. We hope
you will join us. If possible, please RSVP so we can plan accordingly
and share the Zoom meeting link(s).

Researching in Troubled Times: A Community Exchange about the Impacts of COVID-19
April 30, 2020 | 11:00 a.m.—12:30 p.m. by Zoom
Link will be sent to registered participants
Co-presented by the Academic Innovation Studio, Research IT, D-Lab, Library, American Cultures Center, and Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research

The current pandemic has disrupted nearly every aspect of normal life across the globe. Researchers at Berkeley face a myriad of challenges, including funding losses and interruptions; lack of access to lab spaces and equipment; loss of data and specimens; and for those working with community partners and underrepresented populations, new vulnerabilities and inequities. Graduate and post-doctoral students also face a tough job market, and early career researchers are disproportionately affected in terms of tenure, promotion, and grant prospects. At the same time, some Berkeley researchers have emerged as leaders and innovators in the fight against SARS-CoV-2. Shifting priorities, new collaborations, and new funding streams are creating other opportunities.

Please join us for an open conversation and peer exchange about your experience, ideas, questions and concerns as researchers during COVID-19. Whether you’re a lead investigator, a senior team member, or just starting out; whether you're working in the arts, humanities, social sciences, or STEM; whether you’re looking for support, advice, resources, tools, or community—all members of the UC Berkeley community are welcome. “The one thing we essentially need to take care of is how to care for one another.” - Professor Ruthie Gilmore, The City University of New York

As we enter the final weeks of the semester, many of us are no doubt feeling a mix of emotions: relief that Spring 2020 is coming to an end, stress about how to wrap things up in a way that feels true or right for our students, grief for what was lost or not accomplished, as well as anxiety and uncertainty about next year.

In the remaining days of the semester, how do we assess what’s possible, reasonable, and hoped for, of ourselves and in our relationships with students? With some students moving on and others weighing if/when they will return, how do we stay connected or “complete” these relationships? What do these reflections mean for our “new normal”? How do we take important lessons forward as we begin to plan for the next academic year, consider contingencies, and support one another through the process?

This is an open forum for UC Berkeley faculty and academic staff. Share what’s on your mind as well as ideas and suggestions for others. Come for part or all of the discussion. Please login via your UC Berkeley Zoom account. RSVP and learn more.
