Summer Institute

About

UC Berkeley holds a unique position as the first institution of higher education to introduce an Ethnic Studies program. Each summer, the High School Ethnic Studies Initiative offers high school educators the opportunity to enhance their ability to teach Ethnic Studies courses. This initiative, now in its third year, focuses on developing a deep understanding of Ethnic Studies concepts, content, and community engagement.

Educators will receive support from UC Berkeley librarians, faculty, staff and community partners, aiding in developing course content and refining teaching strategies.

Interest Form

Registration is required to attend the program, although it is not yet open. At this time, you can indicate your interest, and we will follow up with registration details as they become available.

Note: Due to significant interest, we will be prioritizing instructors who can attend the full duration of the program in person before completing the interest form.

Housing

Q: Will there be housing options available through the university?
A: We are currently evaluating potential housing options available through the university at a discounted rate for attendees. If you require lodging options, please indicate your preference in the summer interest form by March 14th. We will confirm the details and availability by the end of March. Please check back for updates or contact us at hsesi@berkeley.edu for immediate inquiries.

Q: Are meals included with the housing?
A: No, meals are not included with housing. However, we will provide continental style breakfast at the conference, everyday. We will also serve lunch on the last day. 

Q: Is parking available for those who opt for Summer Conference housing?
A: Yes, parking will be available if we secure Summer Conference housing. Should you require parking during the institute, we can arrange this in conjunction with your lodging request. The designated parking lot is conveniently located 2-3 blocks from the dormitory. If you are unsure about needing parking at the time of your registration, you have the option to pay later using a parking app, although please note that rates through the app will be higher than the pre-arranged rate.

Cost of Attendance

Q: How much does it cost to register to attend the conference?

A: Attendance at the conference is free, but registration is subject to a selective process due to limited space. Priority is given to those who can commit to attending the entire duration of the Summer Institute, which runs Monday, June 16th through Friday, June 20th. Please note, this does not include housing or parking accommodations. Please submit an interest form as soon as possible
