As a faculty member who has been a member of the cohort from the beginning, I have seen first hand the remarkable opportunities this program offers to students....As a teacher I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to offer this rich and valuable learning experience to students, and I intend to incorporate this option in all future classes with a research component.

In College Writing (CW) R4B: “Images of History”, Dr. Patricia Steenland brought awareness and visibility to the Japanese American internment, an event that is often brushed over in history classes or lost in the context of World War II. Students in this course engaged in projects that sought to make it clear that there were over 500 UC Berkeley students who were forcibly removed from campus and displaced at Japanese Internment camps, which prevented them from finishing their degrees, and completely altered their lives. Collectively, the class created life sized acrylic images of three Cal bears in history and created Spark presentations featuring historical context and biographical information about each of the figures.

With the Creativity Discovery Grant from the Art + Design Program at UC Berkeley, the class endeavored to create a project that brings awareness and visibility to the Japanese American internment, an event that is often brushed over in history classes or lost in the context of World War II.
