Putting the “public” in the public university: the now and possible futures of community-university partnerships

The UC Berkeley Public Service Center and the American Cultures Center set out to learn more about the nature and scope of community-engaged scholarship at UC Berkeley. When we started the project, we knew of ACES courses and a few other community-engaged courses and initiatives, but we suspected that there were a lot of other community-engaged courses and projects on campus that we did not know much about yet. Our goal was to create a comprehensive list of community-engaged courses and opportunities. Eventually, we hope to facilitate information-sharing between departments, help students find community-engaged learning opportunities, and advocate for increased institutional support and funding for community engagement programs on campus.
